Heini Kärkkäinen Piano, Finland

“- I never heard the first movement with such a distinctly profiled tension between the lyrical and the fast parts. Rarely, the sublime slow rate has proved so captivating in all its simplicity, and rarely, the final’s presto has swirled with such a frenzy toward its utopian goal.”
Avanti, Esa-Pekka Salonen

Heini studied piano at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. She won the Ilmari Hannikainen Piano Competition, came second in the Maj Lind Piano Competition, and in 1993 was nominated Young Artist of the Espoo International Piano Festival. In Europe and the USA she has performed as an orchestral soloist and has also played chamber music. Heini has given first performances of many contemporary Finnish works. She was involved in Beethoven Plus, focusing on Beethoven’s Sonatas for piano and violin, and her next project will involve Brahms and Bartók. She plays regularly with Robert Cohen, and has made several prize-winning recordings. Heini is a Principal Lecturer at Tampere University of Applied Sciences, and Artistic Director of the Tampere Chamber Music Festival, inaugurated in January 2017, which combines concerts, lectures, workshops and masterclasses.
